“The only stationery store anyone should ever go to in the South Bay” is how one reviewer described our next honoree. Established in 1957, this family-run business has been supporting the South Bay for 60 years. Banner moved to Main Street El Segundo in 2005, bringing unique gifts, office products and friendly service. Kevin purchased the business in 2011, upon the retirement of Dave Hornbecker, who still works part-time. Most recently they acquired Par Office products, offering a line of premier business items to their already outstanding office products inventory.
Kevin supports many Chamber events and founded, along with Brenda Newman from the Jewelry Source, “The Downtown Holiday Open House” event which brings hundreds to our downtown each December. Supporting the local community, they offer a 5% discount to local students and donate 10% of the proceeds to the El Segundo Ed! Foundation. School children and parents crowd the store to fill baskets with school supplies at the beginning of the school year.
Kevin is a 6th generation Californian from the Sepulveda family. Kevin and his wife Teresa, are the parents of four children and three grandchildren and recently welcomed a new granddaughter “Flo” an 8th generation Californian to the family. We are pleased Banner Stationer calls El Segundo home.
Downtown Business of the Year
Our downtown business of the year creates a relaxed Tuscan-inspired trattoria with a warm and rustic ambience, traditional Italian food and regional wines. You don’t have to travel to Europe for this experience – its available right here in El Segundo. Celebrating its 10-year anniversary and recently re-branded, they draw visitors to downtown. A recent visitor commented “I’ve been married for 20 years and when I want to go on a date with my wife, this restaurant is the place we go. The City of El Segundo recently hosted an Elite Yelp event “A Taste of El Segundo”. Ninety five yelpers dined at five local restaurants. A reviewer commented “The best mozzarella meatballs I’ve ever eaten!” They enhance El Segundo by supporting local non-profits, the El Segundo Ed! Foundation and the community with their delicious food and friendly service. They have created a family- friendly place on Historic Richmond Street.
We congratulate DeLuca Trattoria on the Downtown Business of the Year Award!
2017/2018 Community Betterment Award
El Segundo Woman's Club
May 23, 1922, seventeen local ladies gathered to organize a club for women to serve the community of El Segundo. In 1936, they purchased the original El Segundo grammar school house from the School Board for the sum of one dollar and moved it to a lot they had purchased at 541 Standard Street, where the original building still stands today. The historic building is a treasure in the El Segundo community, hosting events, weddings and fund-raisers for generations of local residents. In partnership with the nation-wide Federation of Women’s Clubs, they create a place where members make a difference in the community while establishing lifelong friendships.
Recent fundraisers include: assembling quilts for Wounded Warriors, providing shoe tops made from old blue jeans for Soles of Hope, collecting clothes for foster children, collecting bra’s for women in need, supporting the Bob Hope USO at LAX and supporting CASE. Their most ambitious annual endeavor is creating thousands of cascaronies. “Eggs stuffed with crepe paper” that are sold at the annual Fourth of July celebration at the El Segundo Recreation Park. The proceeds from the cascaronies support scholarships for graduating El Segundo High School seniors. The Chamber is pleased to honor their efforts with the 2017 Community Betterment Award.

The Los Angeles Lakers
& South Bay Lakers
The Award-winning Los Angeles Lakers and South Bay Lakers call El Segundo home. Construction of the Los Angeles Lakers Training Facility will be completed this summer. This new, 122,000 square-foot, two-story building will accommodate the Lakers business and basketball training facility, and will feature an exhibition court with up to 750 retractable seats. The Lakers organization has made an $80 million investment and will create up to 1,000 jobs. Not only are they investing in the community, they support Los Angeles community through the Lakers Youth Foundation. They give back to the community creating a positive impact that creates and strengthen bonds allowing people to recognize that the Lakers organization is more than just a basketball team, but is an integral part of the Los Angeles community. The impact of the Lakers organization reaches far-beyond the El Segundo and Los Angeles Community.
The South Bay Lakers might have a new name, but the team itself has been an expanding part of the organization for more than a decade. Renamed after their Los Angeles region that includes their El Segundo stomping grounds, the South Bay Lakers are looking to increase the standard of NBA affiliate teams. The last two seasons have seen the South Bay Lakers rise to the top of the NBA G League with the 2016 campaign ending with a trip to the Finals where the team came just one win short of winning the championship. Go Lakers!
On behalf of the Chamber of Commerce, our community, as well as the surrounding communities, we are thrilled to honor the Los Angeles Lakers and South Bay Lakers with our 2017 Business/Organization of the Year Award.
